We often struggle to understand why we do the things that we do. Some of the things that we do are harmful things that we know are not good for us, that might even kill us. But we do them anyway, telling ourselves that we cannot stop, that it is a habit or an addiction that we are helpless in the face of. We sneak bites of candy bars on the same day that we start our new diet; we keep an emergency cigarette tucked away once we announce we are quitting for good this time; we have just one more drink when we have just promised ourselves that we will only have one; or we skip the gym despite having carried our exercise clothes to work with us, to make sure that we go. We make promises to ourselves about how we must change, how we plan to change, and then when the time comes - we drop the ball, we sabotage our best efforts and we end up angry and frustrated with ourselves. Over and over again. Whatever the bad habit, this is a cycle that many of us seem doomed to repeat.
Inspired by Jonathan Haidt's concept of the elephant, the rider and the path in every one of us, this story aims to illustrate why we make all those well-meaning plans to change our habits for the better and then fail again and again. Our story follows three people, each person comprised of an Elephant and a Rider, journeying along their personal Path towards their individual Goal. These three pairs will show you how to listen to your Elephant who knows your deepest desires and is the key to achieving the Goals you were really meant to pursue and achieve.
This story was shaped and crafted through numerous tellings and retellings in Red Cross and Red Crescent behavior change trainings conducted globally. Special thanks to the staff and volunteers who discussed and debated the struggles each of our Elephants and Riders face on their Paths. Like the work you do everyday, you made all the difference.
